Week 2 I was able to evaluate to video editing software programs to see which one I liked the best. I decided to explore Windows Movie Maker and Pinnacle Studio Plus. Both of the editing programs have similar functionality and 3 pane layout design for the user interface. Both of the programs are user friendly and are fairly easy to use without the use of advanced technical skills. Pinnacle Studio Plus provides the user with more customized options, effects, and features since the new version of the software was recently released. Pinnacle Studio Plus provides 12 file extension options than Windows Movie Maker who offers four. It was noted that just because the video program plays in Windows Media Player doesn't mean that the final video project could be imported by Windows Movie Maker. However, Windows Movie Maker is generally included to be standard on most PCs that have Windows XP operating systems. Pinnacle Studio Plus offers a free 15-day trial which can be purchased and downloaded to your computer. Over the past several years I have taught my students how to create a movie using Windows Movie Maker. It is very easy to learn and the students were able to navigate through the program and make their own customized effects, animation styles, and other functionality for their school projects. Windows Movie Maker is still my favorite video editing software because of its availability and ease of use.
In the article, Video Basics and Production Projects for the Classroom by Andrew Garrison he stated that,"Media production offers a means for students to talk to whomever they think is an important audience. It does all this because students want to say things that have meaning to them-authentic production comes from authentic learning." As stated earlier students love showing off their creativity and individuality. Since we are living in a digital world students love to use technology to participate in authentic learning experiences. Technology provides them a means of communication to showcase their talents and connect with their peers in the way they enjoy best. They are able to be original, unique and have an audience to share in their success.
